Case Background

In November 2019, Mike Bloomberg announced his candidacy for President of the United States and thereafter his campaign began hiring staff, including field organizers, throughout the country. As part of the Bloomberg campaign’s effort to recruit employees, it guaranteed employment through the presidential election in November 2020 – no matter which Democratic candidate was at the top of the ticket – and provided full healthcare benefits for staffers and their families. Many staffers left their jobs or took leaves of absence to take advantage of the Bloomberg campaign’s promise of secure employment and excellent benefits. They worked grueling hours. After Super Tuesday, Mike Bloomberg dropped out of the race. Instead of keeping its promise of guaranteed employment, the campaign terminated the vast majority of his staffers.
